Come to The Cabaret! Artist Profile: Ute Lemper

Few artists can enthral an audience like the renowned vocalist and actress Ute Lemper. Her career is vast and varied. She has made her mark on the stage, in films, in concert and as a unique recording artist and interpreter of sultry Berlin cabaret, French Chanson and the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill.

Ute was born in Münster, Germany in 1963. After graduation from the Dance Academy in Cologne and the Max Reinhardt Seminary Drama School in Vienna, she started performing in Stuttgart with roles in plays by Fassbinder and others. She went on to dazzle audiences in Europe and worldwide in musical theatre roles - Velma Kelly in Chicago (London, New York, Las Vegas), Lola in The Blue Angel, Peter in Peter Pan (both in Berlin), Cats in Vienna and Sally Bowles in Jérôme Savary's Paris production of Cabaret. Yet she returned again and again to the dark, complex and powerfully creative German past, in solo concerts like Kurt Weill Recital and Berlin Cabaret Evening; in symphony concerts, including The Seven Deadly Sins and Songs from Kurt Weill; in Pina Bausch's Kurt Weill Revue; and on the discs Ute Lemper Sings Kurt Weill (Vols. I & II), The Threepenny Opera, The Seven Deadly Sins, Mahagonny Songspiel, and Berlin Cabaret Songs (comprising works of songwriters censored or persecuted by the National Socialists).

Ute's edgy aesthetic and repertoire also reach far beyond Germany. Though she says, "I cannot stress enough my life's journey exploring repertoire inspired by art of the Weimar Republic," she points out that this art also "reflects other philosophical and cultural horizons, other political matters, and other times." In order fully to explore and comprehend the history she inherited, Ute has naturally and with brilliant success taken up material from other European traditions and from the United States. Ute has explored the French chanson from Edith Piaf, Jacques Prévert, Joseph Kosma and Serge Gainsbourg to the Belgian poet Jacques Brel. She also explored the contemporary alternative rock repertoire – from Tom Waits, Elvis Costello to Nick Cave on her Punishing Kiss album – and finally created her own original material which can be heard on the latest album But One Day...

Ute has just recorded and co produced, with Todd Turkisher, a complete album with her own original songs. She wrote music and lyrics and together with her band, arranged a unique song cycle of unusual stories about places, cities, lives and love.

Following a remarkable début with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in 2007, hailed by the Irish Independent as 'brilliant, stunning and totally captivating', she returns on Tuesday, December 1 to command and mesmerise with her elegant, eloquent, inimitable style.

A Life Less Ordinary

George Enescu - a prodigious musician since his early childhood is renowned for his violin virtuoso performances as well as his well-known Romanian Rhapsodies.
Enescu was born in Liveni, northern Romania. He entered the Vienna Conservatoire at seven, to study the violin, graduated when he was 13. It is there where he first met Brahms, whose influence is evident in Enescu's early works.
In 1923 he made his debut as conductor with the Philadelphia Orchestra in New York. He appeared as a conductor with many American orchestras, and in 1936 it is believed that he was one of the candidates considered to replace Toscanini as permanent conductor of the New York Philharmonic.
In 1935, he conducted the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris and Yehudi Menuhin (who had been his pupil for several years starting in 1927) in Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major. He also conducted the New York Philharmonic between 1937 and 1938.
He lived in Paris and in Romania, but after World War II and the Soviet occupation of Romania, he remained in Paris.
His generosity and conviviality were legendary. Between the two World Wars, George Enescu seemed to be at the height of his powers, conducting the New York Philharmonic and numbering among his pupils Yehudi Menuhin. But his long exile from Romania following the communist take-over took its toll on him, practically and psychologically, and he died in poverty in Paris in May 1955.

Remus Azoitei and Eduard Stan’s Internationally acclaimed recordings of George Enescu's complete works for violin/piano on 2CDs (2007/8) have inspired an international tour of cultural capitals, bringing the work of this brilliant Romanian composer and musician to a live, world-wide audience.

The National Concert Hall opens its new season with a visit by one of Europe’s oldest orchestras – the Leipzig Gewandhaus. Tracing its ancestry back to 1743, the ensemble’s worldwide reputation is certainly justified.

Under its Italian music director Riccardo Chailly, the programme not only honours the 200th anniversary of Mendelssohn’s birth but also his tenure as the orchestra’s principal conductor in the 1830s.

In his ‘Hebrides’ Overture - a stunning seascape reflecting his visit to the Scottish Isles in 1829 - the Gewandhaus strings are at their most seductive expressively floating Mendelssohn’s melodic inventiveness.

Maestro Chailly maybe allows the woodwind over-pointed emphasis but then underlying eddies and turbulent swells in the music create unsettling fascination.

Stricter musical form arrives with Mendelssohn’s First Piano Concerto. Palestinian artist Saleem Abboud Ashkar reveals the delicacy of the composer’s elegant phrasing and makes the central ‘song without words’ Andante particularly lyrical.

The somewhat empty flourishes of the outer movements find the soloist no less attuned to their bravura-fingered fireworks.

The second half of the evening is awash with exotic Russian character. Mussorgsky’s ‘Night on a bare mountain’ has the biting precision of Rimsky-Korsakov’s vivid arrangement while his piano ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ spring to life in Ravel’s masterly orchestration.

The Gewandhaus players capture every fleeting nuance and every lingering dramatic gesture. Each of the sketches tells its own story be it a lumbering Polish oxcart, the twittering women of Limoges or the cavernous depths of Roman Catacombs.

But, under Chailly’s direction, this is a performance of enormous stature and massive proportion culminating in Kiev’s ‘Great Gate’. Kremlin bells toll majestically and the NCH resounds with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra’s magisterial refulgence.

Having collected three Mercury Music Prize nominations and two MBE's, the Waterson Family are one of Britain's most successful and influential folk bands. Bringing the 2009 ESB Beo Celtic Music Festival to a close on Sunday 29 August, these ambassadors of British Folk music will take over the Main Auditorium in what will be a memorable evening of folk music- past, present and future.

Eliza Carthy is winner of 2 Mercury Prize nominations over a 15 year career during which she has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists from Paul Weller to The Wainwrights, Nick Cave and Joan Baez. Martin Carthy’s (MBE) settings of traditional songs with guitar have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Billy Bragg and many more. Norma has also been awarded the MBE and was the first folk artist to be nominated for a Mercury Music Prize. The extended Waterson Family concert is a memorable evening with folk music’s most emotive singers and last celebrated a unique concert performance in the Royal Albert Hall in 2007.

Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy and Eliza Carthy were also part of Hal Wilmer’s Rogue’s Gallery, Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys which was on tour last year and joined artists such as Tim Robbins, Suzanne Vega, Beth Orton, Shane McGowan, Neil Hannon, Pete Doherty, Martha Wainwright, Julie Fowlis, Gavin Friday, Teddy Thompson and many more featuring songs from the two disc compilation Pirates of the Caribbean starring Johnny Depp.

BORIS BEREZOVSKY AT THE NATIONAL CONCERT HALL – 23/05/2009

While not exactly keeping the best wine until last, the visit of Russian pianist Boris Berezovsky for the final recital in the National Concert Hall’s own 2008/09 celebrity series certainly means tasting the ‘crème de la crème’.

Here is an artist not only possessing incredible technique, which seems to have come naturally to him, but also enjoying unusual musical insight.

His choice of composers – Rakhmaninov, Chopin, Godowsky and Liszt – recalls legendary figures who were themselves phenomenal pianists and Berezovsky follows the path of these Herculean characters to stand in the upper echelons of today’s virtuosi.

He begins with Rakhmaninov’s First Sonata, itself something of a rarity due to its prodigious difficulty. Berezovsky ensures its melodic line is unerringly clear no matter how dense the surrounding textures.

The calmer central Lento has a constantly swaying undercurrent beneath its elongated lyrical phrases. The piece meanders quixotically but Berezovsky gives it a meaningful sense of purpose.

He makes the massive chordal sequences of the fiendish Finale resound like the bells of the Kremlin. The music is wildly self-indulgent, and even undisciplined, but Berezovsky’s interpretation raises it to Himalayan peaks.

Chopin’s First Scherzo is a shade too fast but a selection of his Studies in their original form and in Leopold Godowsky’s spectacular transformations are simply fantastic. The famous ‘Revolutionary’ Etude in Godowsky’s ‘left hand alone’ version loses some of its éclat but is still dazzling.

Five of Liszt’s Transcendental Studies come in awesome proportions with Berezovsky providing incredible variety through delicate pastel shading and outrageously flamboyant colour.

A musician of enormous stature, Boris Berezovsky is in class of his own.

The RPO Scratch Orchestra is a unique experience for all young musicians. You will be supported by a team of world-class musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, who will help you every step of the way. Aimed at creating original compositions in different music styles, there are only a few requirements: to be willing to work as a team, come up with lots of great ideas … oh, and be prepared to enjoy yourself!

In the ever-expanding landscape of 'world music', few performers are as widely recognized or revered as Malian guitarist, composer and singer Habib Koité. He performs in the National Concert Hall on 18th February @ 8pm with Bamada ,an extraordinary group of Malian musicians.

While many international artists reside fleetingly on the fringes of popularity, Koité's impact has been substantial and far-reaching, and his exotic blend of traditional Malian rhythms and melodies with more modern influences such as blues, jazz and rock has endeared him to legions of fans around the globe.

On Monday 26 January 2009, 8pm the National Concert Hall will play host to guitarist Redmond O’Toole as the National Concert Hall 'Rising Star' recitalist for 2009.

Redmond O'Toole has been described as one of the most outstanding young guitarists in Europe. He is the first in the world to adapt Paul Galbraith's groundbreaking technique and instrument. He performs on an 8 string guitar in the position of a cello connected to a resonating box. Recent concerts have brought him to Mexico, Holland, Italy and Germany. In addition to solo recitals Redmond also appears regularly with 'The Chieftains' and in duo with Cora Venus Lunny.

Shannon Murray from Longford Wins The National Concert Hall ‘Snowman Art Competition for Children 2008’

Shannon Murray (12) from Co. Longford, is named the winner of the National Concert Hall’s ‘Snowman Art Competition 2008’. With close to 1,500 entries for the competition to choose from, Shannon’s painting entitled ‘The Entertainer’ depicts the snowman performing with carols singers and a band. The competition, run in conjunction with the Irish Daily Star Sunday, Dublin’s 98 and An Post, was established to encourage children around Ireland to tap into their imagination and demonstrate their creativity in bringing ‘ The Snowman’ to life in a painting or drawing.

The number of entries received was unprecedented and the standard was very high, resulting in a difficult decision for the judges. A number of entries were selected as runners up and their paintings/drawings are available to view online. The runners up are; Ella Love, age 5 from Dublin, Caitlin Daly, age 7 from Co. Cork, Sadhbh McHugh, age 11 from Co. Dublin, Chloe McManus, age 11 from Co. Louth, Cora McCloskey, age 12 from Co. Offaly, Cormac Kinsella, age 11 from Co. Dublin, Katelynn Murray, age 7 from Co. Dublin, Sean Keane, age 7 from Co. Clare, Anthony Stewart, age 8 from Co. Roscommon, Aisling Cowman, age 6 from Co. Wexford, Ellena Brady, age 4 from Dublin 4, john Sharkey, age 6, from Co. Dublin, Sean Darnell, age 10 from Co. Kerry, Oonagh Pierce, age 11 from Co. Limerick, Sophie Harman, age 7 from Co. Wicklow, Aoife Brown, age 3 from Co. Dublin, Sallymay O’Mahony , age 8 from Co. Kerry, Anthony Pinkowski, age 6 from Co. Wexford, Ray Lawless, age 10 from Co. Meath, Ella McGrane, age 10 from Co. Dublin, Elena Ryzove, age 7 from Co. Dublin, Megan Kane, age 10 from Co. Longford, Aoibhe Curley, age 8 from Co. Kildare, Juliette Hennessy, age 10 from Co. Cork, Matthew O’Leary, age 11 from Co. Dublin, Patrick Thomas, age 11 from Co. Wexford, Aidan O’Halloran, age 10 from Co. Kerry and Luke Horner, age 12 from Co. Dublin.

The winner will be awarded tickets her family to attend the Snowman Movie Live Concert with Craig Doyle at the National Concert Hall this Christmas season. Her entry will also be used as the front cover design of the Snowman Concert Programme which will be printed for the run of 9 shows at the National Concert Hall. The winning design will also be announced in the Irish Daily Star in early December with a full list of runners up printed on a later date. Every child who entered the competition will receive a Certificate to acknowledge their participation in the competition.

NOTE to Editor:
The National Concert Hall this year will stage Howard Blake’s quintessentially Christmas masterpiece ‘The Snowman Movie – Live Concert’. The Family Christmas special will feature the animated movie on big screen accompanied by live orchestra. Narrated by TV broadcaster Craig Doyle the shows will also feature seasonal favourites and will run on Sunday 14 December 12noon, 2.15pm; Monday 15 December 11am/2.30pm/7.30pm; Thursday 18 December 5pm/7.30pm and Saturday 20 December 11am, 1. 30pm, 4. 30pm and 7. 30pm.

A magical stage setting along with a full orchestra will create a magical Christmas spirit with children from the Spotlight Stage School singing popular Christmas carols. This family Christmas show will also include some seasonal favourites such as Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride and Christmas Festival Overture.

No Strings Attached: €10,000 to be won by Violin Students as part of The National Concert Hall Young Musician’s Award 2008

The National Concert Hall launches its first-ever ‘Young Musician’s Award 2008’ this December. Open to violin students between 13 and 17 years of age, this award gives young musicians the opportunity to win a cash prize of up to €10,000 in total. The cash award will go towards music tuition, instrument upgrade, travel or other costs faced by students as they develop their musical studies. The deadline for receipt of entries is 30th January 2009.

Katie Wink, Learn & Explore Manager for The National Concert Hall comments :

“This competition is just one way in which The National Concert Hall can support young musicians as they continue with their music careers. The substantial cash award will go a long way to help those young students who may not have the financial support they need to further their studies ordinarily. It is in the spirit of excellence and commitment to music education, that the Learn & Explore programme at the National Concert Hall have developed the ‘Young Musician’s Award 2008’ to support the development of young musicians in Ireland”.

The award will be given biannually and for its inaugural year (2009) will be open to violinists.
Upon review of all submitted application forms, a panel of judges will select a shortlist of candidates who will be invited for audition and interview. One or two candidates may receive the award in each cycle, with the number of winners and the amount of the cash award(s), up to €10,000 total, to be at the judging panel’s discretion.
